Architecture and Landscape

Standing the Coin on Its Edge: Architecture and Landscape
Framework

Landscape and architecture are generally considered two sides of the same coin. There are schools of landscape and schools of architecture. Designers are divided into landscape specialists, urbanists, architects, interior designers and others. The interesting point is that – although landscapers occupy an autonomous profession – the boundary between landscape and architecture has never been clear. The edge of the coin – or the boundary between the two areas of expertise, if you will – has never been substantial enough to stand the coin on. Architects often design the landscape around their projects, and landscapers frequently suggest to architects the envelope, the orientation and the size of buildings.
With regard to hierarchical considerations, which of those disciplines is the most important may be decided on a case-by-case basis. What is interesting to analyze is where the fulcrum of the scale stands nowadays. Is architecture able to physically build a landscape or does it merely provide clues as to how the landscape is to be created or modified? Almost involuntarily the main question has arisen of its own accord: Is landscape something that can be created from scratch by the human hand or is it something “natural” that can only be modified?
All these questions move one toward a deeper reflection of what really lies behind the idea of landscape.
The Dutch landscape architect Han Lorzing in his book The Nature of Landscape – A Personal Quest1, makes an interesting point about the different uses of the word landscape in the world. Summarizing the results of his research, we discover that the word landscape originates from a cloud of definitions all related to a “picture of natural scenery” or a “picture representing a view of natural inland scenery,” all references stemming from late sixteenth century painting. The research goes even further by analyzing the several ways to express the situation usually indicated by the word landscape.

Urban How

Architecture in Context
One of the most interesting and aphoristic concepts in and about modern contemporary architecture has been theorized by Dutch Architect Rem Koolhaas in his “Theory of Bigness” considerations: “Fuck the Context”.
The year is 1995, the book is Koolhaas’ masterpiece S,M,L,XL and the sentence is the conclusion of a conversation about the category of Bigness when applied to the production of architecture.
“Beyond a certain scale, architecture acquires the properties of Bigness… the size of a building alone embodies an ideological program, independent of the will of its architects… Of all possible categories, Bigness does not seem to deserve a manifesto… Bigness is no longer part of any urban tissue. It exists; at most, it coexists. Its subtext is fuck context.”
The content of the Fuck Context sentence, the concept it explains, has been discussed and most of the time misunderstood by the huge part of the present generation of architects.
Relationship between Architecture and Context resulted therefore and nevertheless being a deeply unresolved issue of Modern Architecture: beyond Esthetic or Technology issues, more than them, surprisingly, Contextualization represents for Post Modern Architects and thinkers some kind of a moral battle involving, up to the present day, debate and literature.
Context as the subtext of Architecture is peculiar to any work of design: its definition and comprehension, as well as that of the consequent step of the designing process, Contextualization, are nevertheless so controversial that a little analysis is always interesting to attempt.
